A New Community Evolves (1810)

Samuel Jones in 1810 built himself a summer home or "retreat," on high ground across Bull Town Swamp. The community of Jonesville evolved around his home. Its first residents were John Way, Louis LeConte, Nathaniel Varnedoe, and later W.L. Jones, Moses Jones, Thomas Sheppard, Edward Quarterman, T.W. Fleming, P.W. Fleming, Joseph Bacon, John Barnard, and John M.B. Harden, a Riceboro physician and son-in-law of Louis LeConte.
